Welcome to South Lanarkshire 's Housing Strategy website
The website contains information about our Local Housing Strategy (LHS) and invites interested organisations and individuals living, working or with an interest in South Lanarkshire to comment on the LHS and progress in its implementation. This page explains:
Why does South Lanarkshire need a Local Housing Strategy?
Good quality housing makes an important contribution to people’s quality of life, affecting individuals’ health and general well being. It is also important for South Lanarkshire’s economy that a good choice of housing is available to attract new companies and their employees. Although many people are satisfied with their housing and the areas in which they live, not everyone lives in ideal situation. Some people live in overcrowded conditions or in housing that is damp, difficult to heat or not suitably adapted to cope with old age, disability or other particular needs. Others may be unable to find housing that they can afford. Sometimes, people are happy with their house, but have concerns about the quality of their local neighbourhood. As well as tackling problems with existing housing, we also have to ensure more homes are built because the number of households in South Lanarkshire is continuing to increase.
The purpose of the Local Housing Strategy is, therefore, to assess the housing situation in different parts of South Lanarkshire, identify new housing needs and problems such as those described above, and set out an action plan for improving housing and neighbourhoods where problems exist.
How does the LHS relate to other local plans and strategies?
The LHS forms one of a network of different plans and strategies which cover different social and economic issues. One of the most important is the South Lanarkshire Community Plan, “Stronger Together”: this provides an overall framework for the Council and its partners to jointly tackle problems and take advantage of opportunities in a “joined up” way. It aims to improve the quality of life for everyone living in South Lanarkshire by creating successful and inclusive communities: the Local Housing Strategy has a key role to play through the provision of high quality housing in safe and attractive neighbourhoods.
As well as the Community Plan, a series of other plans have important links to the LHS. You can find out more about these plans in our Summary of Key Strategies and Plans.
How was the Strategy developed?
Although overall responsibility for preparing and implementing the Local Housing Strategy lies with South Lanarkshire Council, it was developed in partnership with key housing organisations through a Local Housing Strategy Steering Group, and in consultation with wide range of interest groups and local residents. The Steering Group, which includes representatives of different council departments, Communities Scotland, the local Health Boards and local housing associations, will continue to work together to monitor progress in implementing the strategy and to adjust and revise the strategy in response to changes in housing issues and problems affecting South Lanarkshire.
