SOUTH LANARKSHIRE BIODIVERSITY PARTNERSHIP
South Lanarkshire Biodiversity Partnership (SLBP) was established in 1997 as a local response to the internationally agreed Convention on Biological Diversity, signed by the UK government at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janiero, 1992. The aim of the convention is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity (biodiversity) to the benefit of us all. As such, it is a key component of sustainable development and LA21.

Biodiversity, in short, simply means the ‘variety of life'. This includes all living organisms e.g. plants, insects and animals, their genetic make up and the manner in which these life forms interact with each other and the world around them.

The SLBP published the South Lanarkshire Biodiversity Action Plan in 2003. The action plan will, through the partnership and the active participation of local communities, aim to secure a future for our local biodiversity. This will be achieved by focussing upon 5 key areas:

•  Farmland
•  Freshwater
•  Peatland
•  Urban
•  Woodland

Copies of the action plan are available either at your local library or at South Lanarkshire Council's Q&A centres. You can also download by clicking the icon on the left. For further information contact:
